Senior Quality Engineer - Exploratory Testing
We're on a mission to be a Force For Good, through our People, Products and Purpose at Nuix. This extends to our People. We're fiercely passionate, love working at pace, thrive in ambiguity, live, and breathe outside of the box, and above all are good humans. We're determined to make a positive difference in the world, whether through our solutions which help the top companies, governments and agencies find the truth and combat illegal activities, or through our people who care about contributing and giving back both within, and outside, of Nuix. We are a Force For Good. We're selective about who comes on board, and you should be too. But if the above sounds like a match, get in touch today and get ready for the possibility of starting a once-in-a-career journey.
Role Overview:
Nuix is looking for a Senior Quality Engineer to lead and define our exploratory testing practice across the Nuix product portfolio. This is a cross-cutting, high-impact IC role where you will own the exploratory testing strategy, shape core QE tooling decisions, and have a direct say in the QE roadmap and release readiness.
You'll work across Nuix's full product portfolio — from desktop investigation tools and cloud-native SaaS platforms to data processing engines and security products — prioritized based on risk signals such as defect escape rate, release cadence, test coverage gaps, and business criticality. Your mission is to find what automation misses, build structured exploratory testing practices, and uplift the entire QE organization.
Location:
This position will be based in our Sydney office. The candidate is required to attend the office a minimum of 3 days per week but may voluntarily elect to work either remotely or from the Sydney office for the remaining 2 days of the week.
Key Responsibilities
Exploratory Testing Strategy: Design and implement a structured exploratory testing framework across all Nuix products using Session-Based Test Management (SBTM), risk-based heuristics, and charter-driven exploration.
Risk-Prioritized Cross-Product Coverage: Work across product teams prioritized by risk signals — defect escape rate, release cadence, coverage gaps, and business criticality. Not all products at once, but a deliberate, data-driven prioritization of where exploratory testing adds the most value.
Roadmap Influence: Have a seat at the table for QE roadmap planning, Go/No-Go release decisions, and sprint planning. Contribute directly to FY27 QE goals including embedding quality throughout the SDLC.
Testing Pyramid Rebalance: Champion the shift from heavy end-to-end testing toward a healthier testing pyramid with stronger integration and unit-level exploratory techniques.
Gap Identification: Systematically identify and document critical gaps in test coverage, feeding directly into the QE Gap Analysis tracker. Prioritize gaps by risk and business impact.
AI-Assisted Testing: Evaluate and pilot AI-assisted exploratory testing tools as part of the AI-DLC operating model.
Mentorship & Uplift: Mentor the Junior QE members and offshore SDETs. Uplift exploratory testing skills across the QE organization through workshops, pairing sessions, and documentation.
Stakeholder Communication: Partner with QE Managers, Dev leads, and Product to ensure exploratory findings drive quality improvements.
